The ninth month of Islamic calendar and the festive season of Islam ‘Ramadan’ has been keeping the people excited all over the world. Before getting to the preparations let us know more about this beautiful festive season. Ramadan is said to mean ‘burning or scorching heat’ in Arabic as it usually falls within a particularly hot time of the year.

It was during this month that the Quran – the holy book of Islam – was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by Allah. This is a month of fasting (Roza) during the daylight hours from dawn to sunset.

Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam which has been the mandatory act that form the foundation of Muslim life. Apart from fasting the other pillars are faith, prayer, charity and the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Fasting means to refrain from food, gossip, drink, smoking, swearing, sex or other unethical acts, during daylight hours.

Meals are made and served to everyone before dawn and after sunset. The meal served before dawn is called Sehri and the one ate after sunset is known as Iftar. Just like other Indian cultures like Diwali, Raksha-Bandhan amongst others has different aspects to celebrate and be a part of the festival same is with Ramadan. Fasting during Ramadan allows the worshippers to concentrate on faithfully devoting through their prayers, expressing gratitude, seeking forgiveness and helping the needy. Everyone adolescence (Kid at the age of 11 or 12) are expected to take part in fasting.
